The Lion Guard is an upcoming American animated television series based on the 1994 film The Lion King and will broadcast first as an hour long television film in November 2015 and later as a series in January 2016 on Disney Junior. It is the second television series to be based on The Lion King, the first being Timon & Pumbaa which ran from 1995 to 1999.

Plot :

The series will recount the efforts of Kion, the son and youngest child of Simba and Nala, to assemble a team of animals to protect the Pride Lands. Some characters from The Lion King and its 1998 sequel The Lion King II: Simba's Pride will appear such as Kiara, Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Zazu and Mufasa. It will also feature new characters including a cheetah named Fuli, a hippopotamus named Beshte, an egret named Ono and a ratel named Bunga, who will serve as Kion's friends

The Lion Guard is part of an extended The Lion King universe. The original film was followed by a direct-to-video prequel, a direct-to-video sequel (which followed Simba's daughter), and a television series that focused on supporting characters Timon and Pumbaa. It also inspired a video game for Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. The Sega Genesis version was the better of the two, and no one rationally believes otherwise. The same can be said about Aladdin video games.

Zazu – A hornbill who serves as Simba's major-domo.
Mufasa (James Earl Jones) – Simba's father and Kion and Kiara's grandfather who was killed in the original film by his brother Scar, but who lives on as a spirit.
